THE LOQUITUR TOP TEN POWER TIPS FOR LEARNING ENGLISH
- GO FOR IT!
Jump in and speak. Try for the best pronunciation you can, but if your pronunciation's less than perfect don't let that stop you talking. No-one has the perfect accent! Yours will improve with practice.
- LISTEN carefully. Try to spot the difference between the sounds of your own language and those of English.
- DON'T work from the printed page. You'll end up trying to pronounce English as if it were your own language. Better to listen to and imitate authentic audio sources whenever you can. See 4.
- LISTEN & WATCH: listen to the radio in English, audio tapes in the car, watch TV & movies in English. Use these authentic sources (and your Loquitur tutor) to increase your vocabulary and improve your pronunciation.
- Choose a COURSE that lays the stress on COMMUNICATION and USING the language (Loquitur for example!).
- DON'T let grammar put you off. All language contains grammar. That doesn't mean you have to spend all your time studying it! Focus on the bits that give you the freedom to use the English language the way YOU want to. Look for situations and contexts that illustrate grammar in a practical way that's relevant to you.
- USE IT! The best way to learn and remember a new structure or piece of vocabulary (words to you and me) is to use it straight away - and then again and again. The old saying is true: if you don't use it, you'll lose it! Using words fixes them in your memory.
- DON'T try to go too fast: keep revising the words you already know, rather than trying to learn too much too soon.
- LEARN a LITTLE regularly, every day if possible, rather than learning a lot all at once.
- UPs & DOWNs : just like life, learning English has its ups and downs. Don't worry if there are days when you can't remember a thing, your pronunciation is even worse than usual and your grammar is terrible. There will be other days when you are fluent and your accent is wonderful. THAT'S LIFE! And THAT'S ENGLISH! The LOQUITUR way.
